(TEREKEKA COUNTY) – Local authorities in Terekeka County have carried out visits to Reggo and Tombek Payams to assess the security situation following a disagreement among youth in Reggo Payam. The dispute arose between groups of young people from Bura and Gwulukuk over grazing land for cattle.
During the visit, the Chief of Reggo Payam, Lomu Lumayat, called for calm and said there was no reason for conflict over grazing land, stating that the land belongs to the government. He said any future disputes related to land or cattle should be referred to the Terekeka County administration for resolution.
Terekeka County Commissioner, Hon Dr Emmanuel Loku Lodu, instructed chiefs in the area to identify and present those responsible for causing the disturbance. He warned that those found to be behind the conflict should be arrested without delay.
The Commissioner also reminded local leaders of resolutions previously agreed during peace conferences held in Kuda Lo’dimi in Terekeka and in Juba. These resolutions included penalties for cattle theft. He stated that anyone who steals livestock should face the full weight of the law.
During the visit, the Commissioner expressed concern about the availability and consumption of alcohol within the Payams. He said the presence of alcohol contributes to violence, property damage and loss of life. He warned chiefs to ensure that alcohol is not allowed in their communities.
“I do not want to see alcohol in the Payams because it damages property and the lives of our people,” he said. He gave the chiefs two days to identify those who contributed to the dispute and report back to county authorities.
In a separate visit to Tombek Payam, the Commissioner offered condolences to a family that recently lost a relative. He described Tombek as a peaceful community where people live in stability. He said he hopes the area will continue to develop and eventually grow into a more urban settlement.
The County administration says it will continue working with traditional and local leaders to prevent further conflict and strengthen peace among youth and villages.
