(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Construction work on the long awaited Wuluturu Bridge has begun in Yei River County, Central Equatoria State, bringing relief to communities that have faced years of difficult access to basic services and markets.
The bridge links Wuluturu and neighbouring areas to Yei town. It collapsed nearly ten years ago, leaving residents with limited and unsafe crossing options, especially during the rainy season when movement became difficult for people, vehicles, and traders.
County authorities have now launched a rehabilitation programme to rebuild the bridge and restore reliable access throughout the year. Local officials say the start of the work follows earlier delays linked to repairs on other crossings within the county, which have now been addressed.
Speaking during the start of construction, Yei River County Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme said the bridge project will ease movement of people and goods and support local economic activity. He said improved access will help communities reach health facilities, schools, and markets more easily.
The Commissioner said the project is expected to be completed within about three months if work progresses as planned. He urged engineers and contractors to follow safety standards and deliver a strong structure that will serve the community for many years.
The Wuluturu Bridge is also expected to support trade routes linking rural areas to Yei town and nearby border points. Restored access is likely to benefit farmers and small traders by reducing transport costs and travel time.
Residents have welcomed the start of construction, praising the county leadership for prioritising infrastructure that directly affects daily life. Community leaders said the bridge will improve safety, especially for children and elderly people who previously struggled to cross the stream.
Local business owners say improved road and bridge infrastructure is important for economic recovery in Yei River County and have called for further investment in rural roads to support growth and stability.
