(RUWENG ADMINISTRATIVE AREA) – The South Sudan military says the country’s oil facilities are safe, despite fighting in Sudan and the capture of the Heglig oil field by the Rapid Support Forces on Monday.
Heglig, in Sudan’s West Kordofan State, has processing facilities for South Sudan crude before it is sent through pipelines to Port Sudan. Many in South Sudan were worried because oil is a major source of income.
Major General Lul Ruai, SSPDF spokesperson, said on Monday that the fighting in Sudan has not crossed the border. Oil fields in South Sudan near Unity State and Ruweng Administrative Area are protected.
He said SSPDF soldiers are watching the border closely and staying in contact with Sudanese forces. Oil operations in South Sudan are running normally, and workers and infrastructure are safe.
South Sudan relies heavily on oil exports for government income. Any threat to pipelines or facilities could hurt public services and the economy. The military says it will continue monitoring the situation.
