(LAINYA) – Residents Praise Local Government for Sustained Peace and Stability
Residents of Lainya town in Central Equatoria State have commended the county government and security forces for maintaining relative stability in the area over the past several months.
According to Yenga Timon, a local resident, the county commissioner has taken measures to ensure the protection of civilians, support development, and strengthen civil-military relations in the town.
Timon said the return of stability has allowed residents to focus on rebuilding homes, running businesses, and implementing local development projects.
Residents have also noted an increase in the return of displaced persons from refugee camps in Uganda. Reida Keji, a tea seller in Lainya town, said that commercial activities are resuming, with businesses operating into the evening hours. Keji encouraged continued community support for peace and reconciliation initiatives.
Emmanuel Khamis, chairperson of the Lainya County Youth Association, said that life in Lainya County is gradually returning to normal. He noted improvements in social services and public amenities and encouraged youth and residents to prioritise peace and community development.
Khamis highlighted local infrastructure, including White House guest accommodation with internet and electricity, as evidence of progress in the town.
Khamis also urged the government to continue investment in infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Juba-Lainya-Yei Road, schools, health centres, boreholes and other public facilities.
He emphasised that peace provides a foundation for employment and development at the county and state levels, and contributes to national stability.
Lainya County, located approximately 70 miles south-west of Juba, experienced waves of insecurity and displacement during the peak of the 2016 conflict. The current relative calm is seen by residents as an opportunity to rebuild communities and promote economic activities.
