(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Traditional leaders and local government authorities in Yei River County have on Wednesday agreed to work together to strengthen environmental protection and promote cultural heritage .
The resolution was reached during a consultative meeting that focused on climate change, cultural preservation and environmental management in the area.
Participants raised several concerns, including increasing deforestation of both cultural and commercial trees, destruction of crops by cattle herders, and the exclusion of elders from key community decision-making processes. They also cited prolonged dry spells affecting the county.
Speaking at the meeting, Minyori Sub-Chief Henry Sebit thanked the county commissioner for organizing the dialogue, noting that traditional leaders and rainmakers are rarely consulted on issues that affect their communities.
He said the declining respect for traditional roles is contributing to environmental challenges.
A rainmaker from Jansuk Boma called for stronger cooperation among custodians of land, water, and cultural practices. He warned that deforestation is affecting rainfall patterns in some areas.
Yei Town Payam Head Chief, Morish Modi, urged elders and rainmakers to unite in addressing environmental challenges and community disasters, while encouraging residents to protect natural resources.
Paramount Chief Joseph Brown welcomed the initiative, praising the commissioner for bringing together traditional leaders to discuss long-standing concerns.
Yei River County Commissioner Samuel Henry Malimbo emphasized the importance of cooperation between traditional institutions and government authorities in preserving cultural values and protecting land.
The commissioner directed local leaders to organize a two-day dialogue to further examine cultural issues and develop recommendations.
The meeting highlights growing concern over climate change, environmental degradation, and the need to preserve indigenous knowledge systems in Yei River County.
