(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The Yei River County Legislative Council is set to officially reopen in the first week of March 2026, following more than a year of inactivity that left the county’s executive arm without legislative oversight.
Civil society observers had raised concerns that the prolonged dormancy of the Council contributed to ineffective government operations and weakened accountability mechanisms within the county administration.
On Tuesday, the Commissioner of Yei River County, Emmanuel Taban Seme, convened a consultative meeting with members of the County Legislative Council at his office. The meeting centered on preparations for the long-awaited reopening of the Council and its crucial role in strengthening policy direction and enhancing effective service delivery.
During the discussions, Commissioner Taban emphasized that the Legislative Council is a vital organ of governance mandated to address issues of public concern, enhance oversight, and support policies that directly improve the welfare of citizens at the grassroots level.
He expressed concern over the Council’s prolonged inactivity, noting that its absence created a significant gap in legislative oversight and community representation. He underscored the urgent need to reactivate the institution to enable councillors to fully discharge their constitutional mandates for the benefit of the people of Yei River County.
Commissioner Taban officially announced that the Council will reopen on March 3, 2026. He further directed the Executive Director to immediately commence all necessary logistical and administrative preparations to ensure a smooth and successful resumption of Council activities next month.
The Commissioner reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening local governance structures, promoting accountability, and enhancing effective service delivery across Yei River County.
