(JUBA) – President Salva Kiir on Wednesday ordered the release of 97 prisoners from detention facilities across South Sudan, describing the decision as a gesture of reconciliation and national healing as the country approaches a key election period.
The announcement was made during the End of Year State Dinner held at the State House in Juba. The event brought together senior government officials, civil society representatives, business leaders, religious figures and members of the diplomatic community. The annual gathering provided an opportunity for the President to review the state of the nation and outline priorities for the year ahead.
In his address, President Kiir called on South Sudanese to reject violence and to embrace peace, dialogue and unity. He said national cohesion remains essential for stability and development, especially as the country prepares for general elections planned for December 2026.
According to an official statement, the President reaffirmed his government’s commitment to ensuring that the elections take place as scheduled. He stressed that a peaceful and credible process is vital for strengthening democracy and urged that sufficient financial and logistical support be provided to the National Elections Commission to enable it to carry out its work effectively.
The President also highlighted the importance of shared responsibility in maintaining peace. He called on political leaders, civil society groups and community leaders to actively discourage violence and promote tolerance across the country.
The statement said the release of the 97 inmates was intended to strengthen the spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation as the country ends the year and looks to the future.
However, the announcement has drawn criticism from some political observers and opposition figures. They note that several members of the opposition, mainly from the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement Army in Opposition, remain in detention amid ongoing political tensions.
At least eight senior figures from the opposition group, including First Vice President Riek Machar, continue to face legal proceedings after being charged with treason in connection with the Nasir incident, in which soldiers and civilians were killed.
