(JONGLEI STATE) – The South Sudan People’s Defence Forces (SSPDF) have called on all civilians in areas controlled by the SPLA-IO in Nyirol, Uror and Akobo counties in Jonglei State to leave for safety ahead of a planned military operation called “Operation Enduring Peace.”
The SSPDF has advised that families, livestock and anyone not involved in armed conflict should move to areas under government control as quickly as possible. Armed civilians who do not wish to fight with government forces are instructed to hand over their weapons to the nearest SSPDF garrison without delay.
The military has warned that armed civilians found near SPLA-IO barracks, assembly points, or rally areas may be considered as legitimate targets. Young people who are not part of the White Army are specifically asked to relocate with their families and animals to safer areas.
International organisations, including non governmental organisations (NGOs) and UNMISS personnel working in Nyirol, Uror, and Akobo, have been given 48 hours to leave the region. The SSPDF says this is a precautionary measure to ensure civilian safety during the operation.
The statement was issued by Major General Lul Ruai Koang, Director of Media and Press for the SSPDF, and spokesperson for the armed forces. Contact numbers and an email address were provided for further information.
The SSPDF emphasised that these steps are aimed at protecting civilians and maintaining order as the military prepares for the operation in these counties.
