(Juba) – South Sudanese residents can now receive money more easily from friends and family abroad, following an expanded international mobile money transfer service offered by MTN South Sudan through its MoMo platform.
The service enables people in South Sudan to receive funds from a growing list of countries, including South Africa, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, Rwanda, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the United States, Cameroon, Uganda, Kenya, and Ghana among others.
The initiative is part of MTN’s wider effort to improve financial inclusion and cross border financial flows, especially for families who rely on remittances from abroad.
MTN South Sudan is encouraging new users to register by dialing *200# on their mobile phones. Registration is free and provides immediate access to the service.
The platform is designed to simplify how people receive money, which is often a key financial lifeline for many households.
Whether it is for school fees, medical expenses, business support, or daily needs, mobile money has become a vital tool in the lives of many South Sudanese.
MoMo is already widely used across Africa and provides fast, secure, and affordable money transfers.
The service’s growing international reach ensures that South Sudanese living in the diaspora can support loved ones back home without relying solely on traditional banks or money transfer services.
With inflation and currency fluctuations affecting local purchasing power, remittances are increasingly important.
At current exchange rates, users receiving funds can convert them directly into South Sudanese Pounds (SSP), helping reduce travel to urban centers or banks to access financial services.
As of today, 1 USD officially equals approximately 4,600 SSP.
In South Sudan, where access to banking remains low outside major towns, MTN’s service offers a practical solution to millions of people.
The move is also expected to increase MTN MoMo’s footprint across the country and enhance customer trust in mobile based transactions. The ease of use and speed of the service are particularly attractive to rural residents and youth.
MTN has launched promotional material highlighting how MoMo can make everyday life more convenient as part of its ongoing digital campaign.
The service not only supports sending and receiving money, but also includes features for bill payments, airtime purchases, and savings.
This development itself aligns with broader trends in digital finance across Africa, where mobile money is helping to bridge the gap in areas with limited banking infrastructure.
