CES Governor Reaffirms Government’s Commitment to Tarmacking Juba–Lainya-Yei–Morobo Highway

(LAINYA COUNTY) – Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony has acknowledged the poor condition of the Juba–Lainya–Yei–Morobo highway and reiterated government plans to tarmac the strategic road corridor.

Speaking to a public gathering in Lainya County on Friday, Governor Adil said the national government has prioritised the tarmacking of the Juba–Lainya–Yei–Morobo–Kaya Road, as well as the Yei–Maridi Road, to improve connectivity and boost economic development in the region.

For years, residents of Yei, Lainya and Morobo counties have appealed for the road to be upgraded to a tarmac standard, describing it as one of the most important development projects for the people of southern Central Equatoria.

The highway remains in poor condition, particularly during the rainy season, making transportation difficult for travellers, traders and local communities. Many residents have continued to call on the government to commence permanent construction works on the road.

Although bush clearing was previously carried out as an initial step towards the road project, the route has remained largely unimproved, raising concerns among road users.

Responding to the concerns, Governor Adil said both the state and national governments are aware of the challenges and remain committed to improving the road infrastructure.

“This major road falls under the national government. We have seen the poor conditions of the road and it was started to tarmack it, but you know the challenges facing our country. The President and the national government are working on tarmacking this road from Juba up to Kaya and from Yei up to Maridi. We started to cover the bad spots and it stopped behind Bungu, and once we get some resources, it can still be rehabilitated up to Yei and Morobo,” Adil said.

The governor noted that efforts had already begun to rehabilitate some of the worst sections of the road while preparations continue for its eventual upgrading to a tarmac standard.

The Juba–Lainya–Yei–Morobo–Kaya corridor is considered a vital economic route connecting Central Equatoria State to neighbouring Uganda and facilitating trade, movement of people and access to essential services.
