(JUBA) – The Council of Ministers in its regular meeting chaired by President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Friday has endorsed a 2 billion USD road development project backed by the country’s gold reserves. Officials described the initiative as a historic move that will redefine Infrastructure development in the country.
The Cabinet awarded a sovereign guarantee to Shamrock Global Group to construct and improve the over 1,031 kilometers of strategic national roads. The massive project will see several major roads improved to asphalt standard, including:
1. Juba–Yei–Kaya and Yei–Faraksika–Maridi roads
2. Juba–Lobonok–Moli Junction
3. Wau–Raja–Boro Medina
Speaking to the Press, Information Minister Ateny Wek Ateny said the entire project will cost the government a total of USD 2 billion, with every kilometer costing an average of 2.3 million dollars.
The plan, proposed by Mining Minister Lasuba Ludoru Wongo, involves the use of gold as collateral, which the government believes will utilise the country’s resource base to fast-track long overdue development agendas.
Minister Ateny reiterated that the government is committed to peace and stability, adding that security is fundamental to both the development of infrastructure and the democratic transition of the country.
The $2 billion USD roads project stands as one of the most significant infrastructure undertakings in recent years, a substantial investment in development undertaken with the nation’s most valuable resource.
