EPC Embarks on Major Borehole Repairs in Yei County

(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – “Water is Basic” a humanitarian wing of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church (EPC) South Sudan is undertaking a major repair of broken boreholes in Yei River County, Central Equatoria State.     The initiative followed repeated complaints from the Yei River County Women Association regarding water challenges affecting women and girls in the county. The project includes installing new pipes, cleaning covers, and repairing borehole infrastructure across residential areas, schools, health centers, and churches.     According to Faustino Lumori, a senior project team leader at Water is Basic Yei, the initiative aims to provide clean drinking water, prevent waterborne diseases, and protect women and girls from traveling long distances for water.   Since August 2025 to January 2026, approximately 40 boreholes have been successfully repaired, with more in the pipeline for the  Yei Town and its peripheries.  

“We undertook this important work because water is life, and we want to address challenges affecting people in search of clean drinking water in the residential areas of Yei County and we did this great work with approvals from the department water and Sanitation in Yei River County.” Said Faustino.

 

The rehabilitation process involves replacing decomposed, broken water pumps and installing new pipes and protective covers. Faustino added that more boreholes are currently being mapped for repairs within the town and its peripheries.   Elizabeth Poni, a resident of Hai Lomuku one area said;  

“We have suffered here because our only borehole got broken and forced us to move long distance to get water from wells and this is really big support to us especially the women and girls who suffer most in search of clean water.”

 

Similar sentiments were shared by Mary Kidena, a resident of the Hai Police area, who praised the team for fixing their local water point and urged for continued efforts to address water scarcity in other parts of Yei River County.  

“Women are suffering when it comes to access to clean water, our borehole is now fixed and functioning well and we wish similar support is provided to other areas facing water challenges in Yei River County “

 

The crucial rehabilitation project is being supported by the UK-based charity organization, Barnabas Aid.
