(LAINYA COUNTY) – Local government officials from Lainya, Yei and Morobo counties have returned from a three day dialogue held in Arua District in neighbouring Uganda, where they joined Ugandan counterparts to discuss how communities can better manage urban growth and rising refugee numbers.
The regional forum brought together leaders from districts along the borders with South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Participants shared experiences on how to cope with town expansion, pressure on services, and the presence of refugees and internally displaced people.
Lainya County Commissioner Robert Lasu John Morris said the engagement was useful in helping South Sudanese delegates learn from Uganda’s experience. He thanked the organisers for creating what he called a practical space for cross border cooperation.
Arua District has hosted large numbers of refugees for several years and has developed various ways of linking settlement areas with local trade and social services. Officials from Greater Yei counties said these examples would help shape their own planning.
The discussions aimed to build shared strategies that promote stability, development, and peaceful coexistence. The commissioners said they hope to apply suitable ideas through future partnerships.
Lainya County Government reaffirmed its commitment to improving services and community well being through cooperation with regional neighbours.
