(LASU PAYAM / YEI RIVER COUNTY) – A well known traditional leader in Yei River County has died at the age of 95, his family confirmed on Tuesday, 9 December 2025.
Simona Logoro Lupe, born in 1930, died at his home in Kirikwa Tokori Boma after a long struggle with heart problems. He had been discharged from Yei Civil Hospital a week earlier.
Tokori community chairperson Yatta Khamis James told Access Radio on Thursday that the chief’s passing had deeply affected the community. He said he received the call from the village informing him of the death of Chief Simona, whom he described as a respected figure in Yei, Juba and the wider South Sudanese community.
Khamis said the chief’s death was a major loss not only to Tokori and Lasu Payam but also to Central Equatoria State and the country. He described the late chief as a community elder who worked tirelessly for unity and development and was known for his strong views and commitment to a better Tokori.
He urged the people of Tokori and Yei River County to remain united and continue the work their elders began.
Daniel Arama Lokoroto, a member of the state legislative assembly representing Lasu Payam, also described Chief Simona’s death as a heavy blow to the area.
In a message posted on his Facebook page, Arama said the late chief was one of the last senior executive chiefs who had lived through the liberation struggle. He praised him as a man of integrity and a supporter of community cohesion.
Arama called on residents of Yei River County, including community leaders, political figures and the wider public, to stand with the family during the mourning period. He said the funeral was taking place in the village, while condolences in Juba were being received in Munuki near St Kizito Church.
