(JUBA) – Japan has announced 14.77 million US dollars in new humanitarian and development support for South Sudan, aimed at easing urgent needs and supporting the peace process.
The funding will support food aid, health services, education and other basic needs for vulnerable communities affected by flooding, food shortages and the impact of conflict. The assistance will be delivered through international agencies working across the country.
Officials say the support is intended to stabilise communities and improve access to essential services, while also strengthening resilience in areas prone to shocks such as floods and displacement.
Part of the funding will also support the peace process through regional bodies that monitor and guide the implementation of the peace agreement. These include the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission, the Ceasefire Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring and Verification Mechanism and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development.
The assistance is part of Japan’s official development programme, which focuses on protecting lives and livelihoods. Authorities say the approach places priority on helping individuals and communities facing crisis.
South Sudan continues to face multiple humanitarian pressures, including displacement, limited access to services and climate related challenges. Aid agencies say continued support is needed to meet rising demand.
Under the package, several projects will be funded in South Sudan. These include emergency and recovery support through the International Committee of the Red Cross with 1.71 million US dollars, food assistance through the World Food Programme with 1.2 million US dollars, and support for women and children through UNICEF with 900,000 US dollars.
Further funding includes 166,666 US dollars through UNFPA for health and protection services, 146,666 US dollars through UNITAR to support food systems and livelihoods, and 140,000 US dollars through the Food and Agriculture Organization to improve flood resilience.
Support for the peace process includes 266,666 US dollars for IGAD, 186,666 US dollars for RJMEC and 180,000 US dollars for CTSAMVM.
Additional regional programmes involving South Sudan will also receive funding. These include 2.36 million US dollars through the Africa Centres for Disease Control, 2.33 million US dollars through the International Organization for Migration, and 1.86 million US dollars through Education Cannot Wait to support education in crisis settings.
Other regional support includes 1.33 million US dollars and 773,333 US dollars through UNHCR for emergency preparedness and displacement response, as well as funding for economic cooperation and regional development programmes through the African Union Commission, IGAD and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.
Japan has supported South Sudan across sectors including food security, health, education and governance since before independence. Officials say the new funding will help advance peace, stability and development in the country.
