(JUBA ) – The Governor of Central Equatoria State, Emmanuel Adil Anthony, has renewed calls for peace, forgiveness and strong family values as he joined Christian faithful at the Holy Rosary Parish in Juba to mark the beginning of the New Year.
The special mass, held on Thursday 1 January 2026, brought together worshippers from across the capital. It marked the start of the year with prayers for peace and stability in Central Equatoria State and South Sudan as a whole.
Addressing the congregation, Governor Adil urged citizens to embrace peace and forgiveness, describing them as essential foundations for lasting stability. He noted that division and conflict have in the past slowed development in the state and called on communities to reject practices that promote disunity.
The governor also appealed to church leaders and believers to continue praying for the country as South Sudan prepares for its first national elections. He said spiritual guidance and public cooperation would be important in maintaining calm and order during the electoral period.
Turning to social challenges, Governor Adil stressed the importance of strong families built on moral values. He said families play a key role in shaping responsible citizens and in reducing anti social behaviour, including the activities of criminal gangs. He highlighted the shared responsibility of families and government institutions in creating a safe environment for children and future generations.
The parish priest, Reverend Father Julius Agunda, repeated the governor’s message during his homily. He encouraged believers to practise charity, hospitality and mutual respect, urging them to enter the New Year with a spirit of love and unity.
Both church leaders and the governor praised the work of the security organs for maintaining law and order in Juba during the festive season. They said the calm celebrations across different parts of the city reflected improved cooperation between the public and security forces.
