(JUBA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit has sworn in the new top leadership of the Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement and called on them to unite party members ahead of the 2026 general elections. The ceremony took place on Tuesday at the SPLM House in Juba.
Dr James Wani Igga took office as the First Deputy Chairman of the party, while Dr Akol Paul Kordit was sworn in as the Secretary General. Senior party officials and invited guests attended the event.
President Kiir told the leaders that the SPLM must work to secure another strong mandate from the people of South Sudan, similar to the support it received during the 2010 general elections. He said the party should focus on reconnecting with communities across the country and ensuring fair access to services, which he described as central to rebuilding the values on which the SPLM was founded.
He urged the leadership to mobilise support in all constituencies and ensure that the SPLM remains a party closely linked to ordinary citizens. According to the President, renewing public trust will help the party achieve its long term goals and maintain its role in shaping South Sudan’s political direction.
Senior SPLM members at the event said the swearing in marked a new phase for the party as it prepares for the electoral period.
They said the leadership changes reflect a wider effort to strengthen internal unity, widen political participation and reinforce the party’s position in national affairs.
