(TEREKEKA COUNTY) – The Governor of Central Equatoria State, Lt. Gen. Rabi Mujung Emmanuel, on Friday arrived in Terekeka town to take part in the celebration of the International Day of Peace.
The event held on 19 September was marked under the theme “Act Now for a Peaceful South Sudan.” It brought together hundreds of residents, community leaders, and stakeholders from across Terekeka County.
Governor Mujung joined the gathering to emphasise the importance of dialogue, tolerance and reconciliation as the basis of stability in Central Equatoria and the wider country.
In his address, the Governor stressed that peace is the responsibility of both leaders and citizens. He encouraged local communities to take part in peacebuilding at the grassroots level, saying that without their involvement, no effort by government or partners would succeed.
The Governor’s message was similar that of President Salva Kiir, who recently called on South Sudanese citizens to reject violence and embrace peaceful ways of resolving disputes.
According to official reports by the state press unit, the commemoration in Terekeka included cultural activities, songs and prayers for national unity.
The governor’s office said the day served as a reminder that peace cannot be left to leaders alone but requires the active participation of all South Sudanese.
The International Day of Peace is marked globally on 21 September each year. In South Sudan, different states have organised local events leading up to the official day, showing the growing desire across communities to end cycles of conflict.
