
President Kiir and President Ramaposa
(PRETORIA / JUBA) – President Salva Kiir Mayardit has held talks with his Counter part South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in Pretoria, South Africa focusing on South Sudan’s upcoming 2026 elections and strengthening economic cooperation.
According to statement published on the Presidential Press Unit official social Media Page, the meeting took place on Thursday, March 19th, where the two leaders discussed electoral support and ways to boost bilateral relations between Juba and Pretoria.
President Kiir reaffirmed South Sudan’s commitment to holding elections in December 2026. He said preparations are ongoing under the Revitalized Peace Agreement and stressed that the government is determined to proceed with the polls.
However, Kiir noted that South Sudan will require technical and logistical support to ensure credible elections. He specifically highlighted the need for assistance in printing ballot papers and providing voter registration materials.
In response, President Ramaphosa welcomed the commitment to elections and emphasized the importance of inclusive and credible processes. He assured that South Africa is ready to support South Sudan’s electoral efforts.
The two leaders also discussed economic cooperation. President Kiir invited South African investors to explore opportunities in mining, tourism, air transport, and the oil sector, stating that South Sudan is open for business.
During the visit, President Kiir also expressed condolences to the people of South Africa following the passing of Nicholas Haysom, recognizing his contribution to South Sudan’s peace process.
Both leaders concluded the meeting by reaffirming their commitment to strengthening ties and working together to promote peace, stability, and development.
