(JUBA) – As South Sudan prepared to mark its 14th Independence Day on 9 July 2025, the United Nations called on the country’s leaders and citizens to seize the moment to recommit to peace, unity and inclusive governance.
In a public statement released on Tuesday, Anita Kiki Gbeho, the Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, reaffirmed the UN’s continued support to the Government and people of South Sudan. She said that this year’s anniversary offers a renewed chance for the leadership to prioritise the dignity, rights and safety of every citizen, despite the country’s ongoing challenges.
According to Gbeho, South Sudan is at a “critical juncture” where national unity, consensus building and political compromise are essential to ensure a peaceful democratic transition. She urged all key actors, including political leaders, security institutions, civil society, youth, women, people with disabilities and traditional authorities, to come together with renewed energy for peace.
“Now, more than ever, collective action is needed to reduce tensions, resolve political differences and make tangible progress in implementing peace,” Gbeho stated.
The UN representative stressed that finding common and constructive solutions to the issues affecting South Sudanese people is crucial. She encouraged the country’s leaders to embrace consensus based decision making to achieve lasting stability and rebuild public trust.
