(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – Local leaders in Yei River County have expressed confidence that security is improving in Otogo Payam, following an assessment visit to Ombasi Boma. Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme led the visit on Tuesday morning with senior officials who observed residents actively operating in the market with the presence of South Sudan People’s Defence Forces.
Commissioner Taban said the general security situation in the county is better than before. He however acknowledged that there are still isolated cases of criminal activity. He assured the people that the county authorities and security forces are working to address these concerns and to ensure a peaceful environment for every resident. He told the community that peace is the key to development and asked everyone to work with the SSPDF deployed in the area.
The Commissioner appealed to groups still outside the peace process to stop violence and join efforts to stabilise the county. He said ongoing clashes continue to delay progress and deny citizens essential services, especially in rural areas like Otogo.
As part of improving administration and service delivery, Commissioner Taban also appointed a new Payam Director to take over from Taban Nowel. Officials described this as part of wider changes to strengthen public services.
Community representatives raised their concerns during the visit. Youth leader Santino Mawa said young people are facing insecurity and lack proper access to education. He requested the county leadership to prioritise youth matters and to invest in opportunities for the younger generation in Otogo Payam.
The Chairlady of Ombasi Boma, Chima Adoke, said people still feel unsafe because of occasional threats from armed groups. She asked the government to increase protection for civilians and to improve basic services such as schools and health care facilities which remain limited.
Elder Franco Data welcomed the visit by the Commissioner and said it gave residents hope and confidence in their leaders. He noted that the people of Ombasi have suffered from conflict since 2013 and still need support to rebuild their lives and social services.
Below is a summary of the key needs raised by the community:
