Civil Society Wants Action Over Yei Killing
(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The Central Equatoria State Civil Society Network (CESCSN) has strongly condemned the killing of a Senior Three student in Yei River County on Sunday night, 7 December 2025.
The student, named Emmanuel Kanjo Kennedy, attended Immanuel Model Secondary School and was known locally as a talented football player. Community members described him as humble, disciplined and peaceful. He was seen as a young man with a bright future and a support to his family.
According to local reports, Kennedy was attacked by a group of armed individuals inside the town. He was stabbed in the head and suffered a broken neck. He died on the spot. Another person was also injured in the attack.
Residents say this is the third similar killing in the same month, where young men have been attacked with knives inside Yei town. Community groups say these incidents raise serious concerns about public safety and respect for the rule of law.
CESCSN expressed deep concern that such killings violate the right to life, dignity and personal safety as provided in the Constitution of South Sudan. The organisation noted that these crimes are occurring in residential areas and not in remote places, which has increased fear among local people.
The group called on national and state authorities to carry out a quick and thorough investigation. It said the government must deliver justice for the victims and their families and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
CESCSN also urged the Central Equatoria State Government to support Yei River County officials to improve security. Problems in the area have included attacks on traders, threats against humanitarian workers and targeted killings of civilians. Local leaders say stronger action is needed to allow communities to celebrate the festive season in peace, help displaced families return home and support economic recovery.
The civil society network encouraged people in Central Equatoria and across South Sudan to reject violence, respect human life and work for peaceful communities.
They also sent their condolences to the family of the late Emmanuel Kennedy and to all who have been affected by the killing.
