Trade Ministry Alerts Importers to Fraud
(JUBA) – The Ministry of Trade and Industry has warned businesses and the general public about fake documents being shared in Juba and other areas. The documents falsely claim that import licences have been cancelled and that new vehicle insurance payments are required.
In a public statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry said the documents are not genuine and were not issued by the government. It said unknown individuals are using false information to mislead traders and collect money illegally.
The Ministry made it clear that no import licences have been cancelled. It also said the Minister of Trade and Industry has not signed or approved any orders related to licence cancellations or changes in vehicle insurance rules.
According to the Ministry, all real government notices are shared through official channels and carry proper approval. Any letter or order that does not follow this process should be treated as fake.
Some of the false documents claim that vehicle owners must pay insurance fees before their vehicles can be released. One document mentions an insurance payment of 1,320 United States dollars. At the current market rate, this is equal to about 9,372,000 South Sudanese Pounds.
The Ministry said it has no connection to the bank accounts or names mentioned in the fake papers. It warned businesses not to send money to individuals claiming to act on behalf of the Ministry.
Traders in Juba said such false information can cause fear, delays and extra costs for businesses, especially at a time when many traders are already facing economic challenges.
The Ministry advised all traders, importers and members of the public to ignore the forged documents and to confirm any trade related information directly with the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
It also encouraged people to report any suspicious letters, orders or payment requests to the authorities so action can be taken against those involved.
The Ministry said it remains committed to protecting lawful trade and ensuring a fair and clear business environment in South Sudan.
