Youth Called to Seize Education Chance
(JUBA) – A plan to establish a state run university in Yei has received strong support from the Kakuwa Community, which says the move will expand access to higher education and support local development in Central Equatoria State.
In a press release dated 17th March 2026, the community leadership welcomed the decision to set up Yei University as a centre of learning, describing it as a major step for students who have long faced barriers to further education.
The statement said many young people from Greater Yei, including Morobo, Yei, Lainya and Kajo Keji, have struggled to continue their studies due to the cost and difficulty of travelling to Juba. It added that a university in Yei Town would reduce these challenges and allow more students to pursue degrees closer to home.
The community noted that the project could help raise literacy levels and support economic growth by creating opportunities within the state. It said a local university would also encourage skills development and improve access to education for school leavers and diploma holders.
The leadership called on young people and professionals to prepare for enrolment once the institution is operational. It urged students to take personal responsibility for their education, including engaging in agriculture or small business activities to support their studies.
Prospective students were also advised to begin preparing early to ensure they are ready when admissions open. The statement said studying close to home would allow learners to remain active in the local economy while continuing their education.
The community expressed confidence in the committee overseeing the university’s establishment, noting its experience in academic administration. It said the institution has the potential to grow into a leading centre of learning in the country.
The statement described the university project as an important moment for Central Equatoria State and called for continued support to ensure its success.
It added that the initiative could play a key role in strengthening education and regional development in South Sudan.
