ICPAC Forecast: Mixed Rain and Heat Patterns for South Sudan
(JUBA) – The IGAD Climate Prediction and Applications Centre (ICPAC) has forecast a mix of wetter and drier conditions across South Sudan for the week of 12 to 19 August 2025, with notable temperature contrasts also expected.
According to the outlook, wetter than normal weather is likely over most parts of southeastern and northwestern South Sudan. These conditions will also affect neighbouring countries, including Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Eritrea, Djibouti and western Kenya.
In contrast, drier than usual weather is expected in southwestern, central, and northeastern areas of South Sudan. Similar conditions are forecast for isolated parts of western Ethiopia and sections of coastal Kenya.
Temperature variations will also be significant. Warmer than normal conditions are predicted for central to northern South Sudan, along with northern and southern Sudan, southern Eritrea, southern Ethiopia, central to southern Somalia, much of Kenya, parts of Uganda, and large portions of Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania.
However, southern South Sudan is forecast to experience cooler than usual conditions. Other areas expected to see cooler weather include western, central, and eastern Sudan, western Eritrea, northern Somalia, western and northeastern Uganda and northwestern Kenya.
The forecast highlights the potential challenges for farming, water management and humanitarian operations, as uneven rainfall distribution could affect crop cycles and pasture availability.
With many communities in South Sudan relying on rain fed agriculture, the predicted weather changes may influence both food security and rural livelihoods in the coming weeks.
ICPAC urged national meteorological agencies and relevant authorities in East African member states to monitor conditions closely and prepare for possible impacts.
