(YEI RIVER COUNTY)- Residents of Yei River County in Central Equatoria State joined the rest of the world in celebrating International Women’s Day, calling on citizens to work together for development and gender equality.
The celebration, normally marked globally on March 8, was held in Yei on Thursday, March 12, 2026, under the theme: “Promote Rights, Justice and Action for All Women and Girls in Central Equatoria State.”
During the event, a GIZ Technical Capacity Advisor Juan Benjamin, representing a non-governmental organization, urged men and women to unite and work together for the progress of Yei and South Sudan.
She emphasized that development can only be achieved through collective effort.
“Boys, girls, men and women must work together as one body. We cannot move Yei forward as individuals, but together we can push Yei and South Sudan toward progress. Let us invest in the resources we have,” she said.
The Acting Director of Gender, Child and Social Welfare for Yei River County, Ajaniya Amude, also called on women to work together for the development of the country.
She encouraged women to remain courageous, hardworking and coordinated in order to play a vital role in building families, communities and the future of South Sudan.
“Women must put more effort and commitment into empowering women and girls and ensuring they enjoy equal rights,” she added.
Meanwhile, the Director of Public Order, Noel Taban, said International Women’s Day is a day that recognizes women’s struggle for equal rights around the world.
“People across the world appreciate the important roles women play in communities, families, education and leadership at the national level,” he explained.
International Women’s Day is a global event celebrated annually to recognize the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
