(JUBA) – South Sudan is stepping up efforts to improve food safety and testing systems through closer cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization, officials said after a meeting in Juba.
The talks focused on upgrading laboratory capacity, including the rehabilitation and equipping of the central laboratory in Juba and another facility in Nimule. Progress under ongoing programmes such as the AMVAT and CRAFT projects was also reviewed.
The South Sudan National Bureau of Standards said stronger laboratory systems are needed to ensure the safety of food and other goods, especially as the country relies heavily on imports. Officials added that improving testing and certification will also support trade and protect consumers.
The Food and Agriculture Organization said it will continue to support the bureau through technical assistance, supply of laboratory equipment and training of staff. It also plans to assist efforts to meet international laboratory standards, including ISO accreditation.
Officials said stronger standards and testing systems are important for improving product quality, expanding market access and supporting economic growth in South Sudan.
The meeting was held at the headquarters of the South Sudan National Bureau of Standards in Juba and brought together senior officials from both institutions.
The bureau said it will continue to work with development partners to strengthen food safety systems and improve national standards.
