(Aweil) – Akol Yam 91.0 FM is back on air this week, restoring an essential source of information and community programming to Northern Bahr el Ghazal and nearby areas, after a windstorm destroyed its main transmission mast in May.
The station had been off air since the severe weather event, which brought heavy rains and strong winds that knocked down its 72 meter broadcast mast.
The sudden loss of transmission left many listeners without access to local news, educational content, and cultural programs that the station regularly provides.
In response, the station’s management and local stakeholders quickly mobilized resources to resume service. A temporary 40meter mast has now been installed to enable broadcasting while a permanent replacement is being planned.
The return of Akol Yam FM has been welcomed by the community, who rely on it for updates on government announcements, social issues, civic education, music, and discussion forums.
Broadcasting again at 91.0 FM, the station plays a role in connecting people across Northern Bahr el Ghazal, especially in rural areas where access to other media remains limited.
Its programming often includes information on peacebuilding, public health, and community development, topics crucial to the region’s stability and progress.
Station staff say they are working with partners to secure funding and technical support for a stronger and more permanent transmission mast.
