(JUBA) – Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony of Central Equatoria State has called for stronger policies to unlock the potential of South Sudan’s pastoral economy.
He made the remarks during a two day South Sudanese Conference on Pastoralism and Livestock Sector Development held in Juba.
The event aims to promote sustainable ecosystem management for pastoral communities in cross-border areas of the IGAD region.
Governor Adil said that although pastoralism and livestock management face ongoing challenges, the conference provides an opportunity to transform the sector from a story of vulnerability into a source of economic growth and food security.
He urged the adoption of effective policies and best practices to benefit pastoral communities across the state.
The Governor also highlighted major obstacles affecting the sector, including climate change, insecurity and limited infrastructure.
He appealed for joint action by government agencies and other stakeholders to address these challenges and strengthen the pastoral economy.
Hon. Onyoti Adigo, National Minister of Livestock and Fisheries, said livestock remains a key pillar of rural livelihoods, nutrition, and economic opportunity.
He outlined government efforts to attract partnerships and investment to improve livestock breeds, provide better animal health services, and develop modern processing and marketing facilities.
Dr. Kathiya Dominic Lokeris, Head of Livestock Development at the IGAD Centre for Pastoral Areas and Livestock Development (ICPALD), stressed the importance of coordinated efforts among local, national, regional, and global partners to achieve sustainable livestock development in the region.
The conference, organised by the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries with support from IGAD, aims to tackle poverty, reduce cattle-related conflict, and improve food security.
The event focuses on policy implementation including the IGAD Protocol on Transhumance, technical training, research, market access, climate-smart strategies, community empowerment, and strengthening livestock value chains.
