(TEREKEKA COUNTY) – The Commissioner of Terekeka County, Dr Emmanuel Loku Lodu, held a review meeting on Monday with the local chiefs of Rijong Payam to discuss the ongoing problem of theft in the area.
During the meeting, the Commissioner questioned the traditional leaders about why incidents of stealing continue to happen within their jurisdiction despite previous efforts to stop them.
In response, the chiefs explained that several factors make it difficult for them to catch and report criminals. They noted that thieves often hide in thick bushes where it is hard for local leaders to reach them.
A major issue mentioned by the chiefs is the lack of a mobile phone network in many parts of the county.
They stated that areas such as Mundari Molla, Jongkok, and Tindilo have no signal, which prevents people from calling for help or reporting crimes quickly. The leaders requested that a network be installed to help improve safety.
The chiefs also asked for better transport options. They explained that if they manage to catch a thief, they currently struggle to move the suspect to the county headquarters for trial or detention.
The leaders of Rijong Payam used the meeting to strongly speak out against theft. They said they do not support these crimes and suggested that the most serious punishments should be used against those caught stealing.
Commissioner Loku Lodu called on the chiefs to remain ready and active in their duties. He told the leaders that there is a strong need for reform as part of building a new future for the Mundari community.
While the costs of new communication towers or vehicles were not confirmed, local estimates suggest that improving such infrastructure in rural payams would require significant investment by telecom giants in the country such as MTN, Zain or Digitel.
