(JUBA) – The Deputy Minister of Information, Communication Technology and Postal Services, David Yauyau Jankuchi, has warned media houses in South Sudan against misrepresenting court proceedings relating to the Nasir incident.
He said on Tuesday, 11 November, that any form of disrespect towards court orders, or reporting that risks contempt of court, must stop.
He made the remarks as he opened a three day training in Juba aimed at improving the capacity of journalists in court reporting.
The training focuses on helping media workers handle high profile and sensitive legal matters accurately and responsibly.
Yauyau said the Ministry had recently received concerns about misconduct involving some journalists covering the special court proceedings.
He said inaccurate reporting, misrepresentation of facts, and behaviour that undermines the dignity of the courtroom were being noted.
“We have seen instances where misconduct and misrepresentation of the media has drawn official concern. Indeed, the Media Authority has on occasion been called upon to answer for issues related to misconduct of journalists, including misrepresentation in reports, disrespecting court hearings and actions bordering on contempt of court. This must stop.”
The Deputy Minister added that while the government remains committed to freedom of speech, the media must also respect the law and the authority of the courts. He said responsible reporting was essential, especially in cases of national interest.
He urged journalists taking part in the training to focus on professional conduct and adhere fully to the national code of practice for journalism.
He said the Ministry expects the training to strengthen media standards and promote accurate, fair and respectful reporting on court matters.
