(MOROBO COUNTY) – Authorities in South Sudan’s Morobo County have ordered the suspension of night club discos following growing security concerns in the area.
The decision was reached during a security meeting held last Friday at the county headquarters, chaired by County Commissioner Joseph Mawa John Okuba and attended by heads of security units. Community leaders at the meeting raised alarm over increasing cases of rape, defilement, substance abuse and rising social disorder linked to nightlife activities.
According to a statement issued by the commissioner’s office, the temporary closure of nightclubs aims to curb escalating issues such as gang activity, teenage pregnancy, and drug abuse.
“Hon. Mawa called for the temporary closure of nightclubs due to concerns over gang activities, teenage pregnancy, rape, defilement, and drug abuse,” the statement said, adding that the move is intended to protect the county’s youth and safeguard its future.
Commissioner Okuba further directed law enforcement agencies, including the police and judiciary to take stricter action in handling cases of rape and defilement. He emphasized zero tolerance for such crimes and called for accountability in ensuring justice is served.
The statement also linked drug abuse to serious criminal incidents, citing a recent case involving an elderly man accused of impregnating his brother’s 13-year-old daughter. The commissioner instructed authorities to treat the case with the utmost seriousness.
In addition to social concerns, the meeting addressed broader security issues affecting the county.
Discussions included challenges in civil-military cooperation, the recent attack and killing of construction workers at Kendila Bridge, cases of cattle raiding, and ongoing surveillance related to the Ebola outbreak in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Commissioner Okuba reiterated the importance of adhering to the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement, urging security forces to respect directives aimed at preventing hostilities among signatory groups and maintaining stability.
Local authorities say the suspension of night discos will remain in force until security conditions improve.
