(YEI RIVER COUNTY) – The Commissioner of Yei River County has strongly condemned recent cases of abduction, looting, and attacks targeting humanitarian workers, traders, women and children in the area.
In a press statement issued on Tuesday, 10 February 2026, Commissioner Emmanuel Taban Seme described the incidents as criminal acts that threaten public safety, community stability and the rule of law in Central Equatoria State and across South Sudan.
He said humanitarian workers in Yei River County are present to provide essential services and life saving support to vulnerable people. He noted that any form of intimidation, violence, or unlawful detention against them weakens relief efforts and harms communities that depend on assistance.
The Commissioner also expressed concern over reports of robbery and harassment affecting civilians, especially traders who travel between town and rural markets to conduct lawful business. He said many have been attacked and robbed of their property, causing fear and disrupting livelihoods.
According to the statement, such acts violate the rights and dignity of citizens and damage local economic activity that supports families in the county. The Commissioner said insecurity on roads and in market areas remains a serious challenge to development and recovery.
He called on those responsible for the crimes to stop immediately and without conditions. He said county authorities will not tolerate any actions that disturb peace, endanger lives, obstruct humanitarian work, or interfere with legal business activities.
Commissioner Taban urged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies and local leaders to help restore safety and order. He said community support was essential in preventing crime and protecting vulnerable groups.
The County Government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the law, protecting residents and partners, and ensuring that aid agencies and traders can operate in a safe and supportive environment.
The statement said Yei River County remains committed to peace, security, justice and respect for human dignity, in line with national efforts to promote stability and development in South Sudan.
