(YAMBIO, WESTERN EQUATORIA STATE) – The media community in South Sudan is mourning the tragic death of journalist Matia Samuel, who drowned in a stream on Wednesday, 7 January 2026, in Yambio town.
The Association for Media Development in South Sudan (AMDISS) expressed deep shock and sadness over the loss, which comes just days after the passing of another journalist, Emmanuel Joseph Akile, in Juba. The close timing of the two deaths has left the media fraternity grieving.
Matia Samuel was a graduate of the Media Development Institute (MDI), where he earned an advanced certificate in journalism. He was known for his dedication, professionalism, and ethical approach to reporting. Samuel worked with several news outlets and notably served as a stringer for the Voice of America (VOA) in Yambio.
Colleagues and members of the community remember him as a committed journalist who provided important news coverage on current affairs, contributing to informed public discourse in South Sudan.
AMDISS called on the media fraternity and the public to show solidarity with Samuel’s family during this difficult time, emphasising the value of supporting journalists and recognising their contributions to society.
