(YAMBIO COUNTY) – Health authorities in Western Equatoria State have confirmed the first death linked to Mpox in Yambio County, as the number of cases continues to rise in the region.
The State Minister of Health, James Abdullai Arona, said the patient had tested positive for Mpox and died at Yambio State Hospital after samples were sent to Juba for laboratory confirmation.
Arona said three positive cases were confirmed in Ezo County, while another patient was admitted to the state hospital in Yambio.
He said the admitted patient later died, and laboratory results confirmed that the cause of death was Mpox.
According to the Ministry of Health, Western Equatoria State has so far recorded four confirmed Mpox cases, including the deceased patient.
Mpox is a viral disease that spreads mainly through close and direct skin contact, including contact with infected rashes, bodily fluids, or contaminated materials.
Health officials have urged communities across the state to remain alert and to report suspected symptoms to health facilities at an early stage.
They said early reporting and treatment can help reduce the spread of the disease and prevent further deaths.
The ministry added that surveillance teams have been deployed in affected areas to monitor contacts and strengthen public awareness.
Authorities also called on local leaders and community health workers to support prevention efforts by sharing accurate information with residents.
