Yei River County Authorities speaking to the media before destroying the seized marjuana
(YEI RIVER COUNTY)—Authorities in Yei River County on Wednesday destroyed an unspecified quantity of seized marijuana, locally known as ‘bangi’, as part of an ongoing campaign to curb drug abuse and trafficking in the area.
County officials, security agencies, and representatives of local media witnessed the exercise.
Speaking during the destruction, Yei River County Commissioner Samuel Henry Malimbo described marijuana abuse as a growing threat to public health and community safety, particularly among young people.
He said the county administration remains committed to eliminating illegal drugs from the community, noting that authorities have previously destroyed other illicit substances, including smuggled high-alcohol-content alcoholic drinks confiscated during security operations.
“The future of our young generation is at stake if drug abuse is allowed to continue unchecked. We will continue working with security institutions to remove these harmful substances from our communities,” Malimbo said.
The commissioner warned that anyone involved in the sale or distribution of marijuana would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law. However, he did not state which law would be used to prosecute suspected dealers.
County authorities also revealed that an unidentified suspect recently threw marijuana over the perimeter fence of Yei Prison before fleeing the scene. Investigations are underway to identify and apprehend the suspect.
Yei River County Police Inspector General Maj. Gen. Ali Abdullahtif said drug abuse has contributed to rising crime and other social problems in the county.
He added that security agencies will continue enforcing the law to protect the public, especially young people who are most vulnerable to substance abuse.
“Our security forces will continue enforcing the law to protect the public, especially young people who are most vulnerable to drug abuse,” he said.
Community elder Antony Dicko welcomed the destruction of the seized drugs, saying it reflected the commitment of county authorities and security agencies to improving public safety.
He expressed concern over the growing number of young people becoming involved in drug abuse. He called on parents, community leaders and residents to work together to protect children from the dangers of narcotic substances.
County authorities urged residents to avoid engaging in the sale, distribution or consumption of illegal drugs and encouraged the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting suspected drug-related activities.
